without ever learning to take into account dramatic license. The author of the story, Evan Hunter, (also known as Ed McBain, among a host of other pseudonyms) had already written the best-selling"The Blackboard Jungle" and seen the book made into an equally popular movie in 1955. The same year this episode of AHP was broadcast, writing as McBain, he helped create the police procedural genre with the first of the immensely popular 87th Precinct series of novels. Until his death in 2005, Hunter-McBain would continue to produce about two 87th Precinct novels a year, as well as an 87th Precinct TV series that ran in 1961-1962.
Oh, yeah -- Hunter also wrote the screenplay for Hitchcock's immensely popular 1963 "The Birds" from Daphne du Maurier's novella.
