Maria does revert back to an animal or at least begins to, in the last shot on the life boat, as Michael York realizes he is back to human and the ship in the distance sounds it's horn, Maria turns briefly and you can see she is beginning to revert back. Unfortunately, this movie does not do the book justice. Don't get me wrong this movie and it's concept intrigued me as a child, but the Brando remake with Val Kilmer comes a little closer to the book.
The question of whether or not man has the right to play god and try to control and manipulate nature is still argued and discussed today. That was the main concept of the book and this movie does a fair job of bringing that idea to light.I suggest anyone who enjoys this film check out the remake with Brando and Kilmer or better yet, read the book.
