Had to laugh out loud (but whimper a little, too) when I read your post, illlminded!
Though our home is no mansion, it is really good-sized. It includes 5 spacious bedrooms and an actual, very large (!) dining ROOM. One would think that someone expected this home to be bought by people having a large family.
However, our kitchen is the size of the proverbial postage stamp. (I believe Realtors describe it as a "step-saver" kitchen because you can very nearly reach all of the appliances without moving from one spot.)
I've come to two conclusions to explain why my kitchen is one of the smallest rooms in our home:
(1) The floorplan was designed by a person that has never cooked or even microwaved anything in their entire life and had never stepped foot in a kitchen while growing up.
(2) The designer assumed that the people who could afford this house would ALWAYS have meals sent in from ... who knows where? and that the only reason to include a kitchen was to have a separate area for the catered food to be transferred onto plates before serving.
Bottom line for either explanation - IDIOT, IDIOT DESIGNER!!
Anyhow, I just wanted you to know that, yes, houses that are quite large can and do have kitchens "that small."
The fact that you didn't believe the kitchen COULD be that small tells me that you've got a kitchen I could 'murder one' for. ;)
