I normally like commentaries. A lot of people don't, but I do. At their best commentaries can provide the viewer with amazing, detailed insight into the mindset and motivation of the characters as they play out a story. Unfortunately, the commentary for the Caprica episode, "Know Thy Enemy" goes out of its way to avoid giving the viewer any meaningful insight into the characters, or the plot. Maybe if I was planning for a career in film making I would have enjoyed the plodding detail about camera types, or editing, but I'm just a fan who is interested in character development. I personally gained nothing from a fifteen minute discussion about why a director chose a particular shot while scene after scene of action, and diolog rolls along with not one single comment as to how what actually happened on screen might relate to the over all story. Okay, you like the director... I get it! But six scenes of important character interaction that may have contributed greatly to the story just slipped by while you waxed on and on about a single camera angle. This is not why I clicked on the commentary. A little behind the scenes techie stuff is fine, no problem. But this commentary is nothing but behind the scenes techie stuff. What is actually happening, story-wise, to the characters, goes by without notice. Sorry, but I really do not care what type camera was used for a six second shot, and I really don't care to hear about it for ten minutes while the action on screen is totally ignored. So, if you are a techie kind of person who is interested in a blow by blow discussion on the ins and outs of editing an episodic television drama, you will love this commentary. But if you are hoping for some insight into the characters, their motivation, or the over all evolution of the story, well... it's not here, so don't bother.
