I worked as a sound assistant on this film for three months beginning in March back in 1991. Here it is 2011 and it seems just like yesterday. My dad was a sax player and so am I. I guess it was just kismet that this project landed in my lap. The story has an existential quality that conveys the message " we are our choices". I can identify with "losing your muse" since it's happened to me several times but the gift never leaves you. Technically speaking, there are some serious continuity problems that present themselves in this film such as the "disappearing tape" and the acting and transitions seem a bit awkward at times. Overall though, I give it a solid three stars since it resonates with me in a nostalgic way bringing back overtones of the past when I'd watch my Dad play sax in those Florida East Coast night clubs during the 1960's. You had to be there!

Gotta give it 5 stars for the sound track alone...beautiful. The story is a bit slow, but I like Yaphet Kotto and Mike Madsen...the actors did a good job as well. I like the quote, "There's no such thing as a safety net in jazz." I have been married to a jazz sax man for 38 years and the quote rings true. If you like jazz, this movie is worth the watch.

I used to own this on VHS. I really like this movie a lot. A talented saxophone player lets his life go after a horrible accident that happened a few years back. When he meets a beautiful girl by the name of Jasmine, who falls for him, the old can of warms gets opened up and he is challenged to let go of the past. The movie has a very Southern feel to it. You can feel the hot boiling summer heat. I thought the acting was great. I love the chemistry between the two main characters.. I thought it was beautiful.

Really boring and the acting isnt that good. Even the hot young girlfriend in undies throughout this film doesnt save it. She's very annoying. Don't do it ppl...

I really like Garrett Morris, but in this role he was annoying. Too much music, too little happening. Too much mindless dialog. That 'muse' stuff cracks me up. After I get a life, I'm gonna get me a muse. And the 'tape,' who cares?

Someone wrote that the Girlfriend Jazmine almost redeemed this movie - as the main character's muse - Really??? She was a pretentious, self-indulgent brat who constantly interfered with his creative process, caused the destruction of two instruments, and almost caused his death!And her girlfriend waving a gun around, and drinking while she's pregnant was sooo tasteless - I had to skip chapters to find a reason to keep watching this thing. Alas, it was not meant to be.Stay AWAY - especially if you're a musician!!!
