It's not a good idea to generalize Japanese like they are some single hive entity. In the US we have many branches of Christianity that can end up looking very different when cross-compared, now throw in other faiths and ideologies. I'm willing to bet the multitudes over in Japan are richly varied and diverse too.Speaking as a Presbyterian I've never gotten the general impression that anime was hostile (open or subtly) to Christianity. There have been some that used Christian words and represented a Church in what can only be described as alien. That's more entertainment than propaganda, like how Voodoo in the US is portrayed in ways it would confuse their faithful. As far as modifying anything goes basic elements of Christianity are packed with adopted pagan festivals and traditions. Jesus Christ wasn't born in December and it is no coincidence that the winter solstice falls around then. Late night services, Church Hymns, and all other technical details aside, for myself the holy night boils down to "Peace on Earth, good will to men."
