That was my first thought, something vague about an exoskeleton. Of course, that's not what this is at all.
Also, until I heard the explanation at the end, I was thinking, well, can't they cut out the extraneous bone? But oh no! Considering what causes this, it looks like they could only attack it with drugs if anything and since it is "regular" permanent tissue, how could you attack that with drugs? Yikes! Seems like these people are just screwed. If it gets too bad, you just call it a life and accept your Darwin award if you know what I mean. But you never know. Medical scientists and physicians come up with all kinds of interesting things. See 2 other replies

Interesting thought, however bone isn't armor and does not protect us against injury (including bullet wounds). Bone can be broken, fractured, sprained etc. Think of a person who takes a bullet shot to the head (the skull is made of bone) and dies when the bullet penetrates the brain (after breaking through the bones in the skull). Also, it is mentioned that this bone growth inhibits the person by making movement difficult or impossible, and imprisons the person's muscles. The bone is attacking healthy cells making this a disease/disorder not adaption. See 2 other replies

If you give it some thought, this could be a form of adaptation into something we've never had before; an exoskeleton! Really, if it was skin cells turning into bones, it might be a little easier for people. then again, there's still that joint problem... But if it can all work our somehow, think of how safe we'd be when we're out shooting at each other. Rawr! Fear my biological armor of safety!
