I agree that I still like the show too, but it's wearing a little thin with the formulaism--the girl/boyfriends can't stay together, etc. And yes, that bit with Evan does seem (now that you mention it) to be more like just something to keep him in the show since he just sort of naturally faded from importance in the show. But the thing is, they might find a way to really do something with it. I believe they can. I'm not too worried though. As long as the show doesn't just totally fall flat or have really ridiculously desperate stuff happen.
It is already sad (and getting a bit old) that it looks like maybe Cappie and Casey can't stay together after all. Well, the theme of this episode was moving on and moving apart and that's what they were showing; so, one can say that it was all part of the plan for playing on the theme. So, I guess I have to say that at least as far as the episode goes it looks like our writers are on top of it (ok, were I should say as it was like last year).

The new season starts January 3rd at 9, right after Pretty Little Liars!
