Maybe I'm one of those people that don't have that addictive personality. I don't understand how someone could let a hobby or good time take over. The movie sucked. Just another way for a person with problems to make money.

Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full The Whole Truth.
Some of the viewers here are possibly not very experienced -- at least not firsthand -- with what an impact of a habit like this can have. Then, of course, this 21st century is one of the "product" generations. So many babies of the 70s, 80s, and 90s are products of parents who got caught up. Addiction to anything makes for a hard life, and it is indiscriminate once its "victim" falls prey. Some folks managed to "experiment" with recreationals throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s without addiction. It's my opinion that the only credit to those folks is that they don't have addictive personalities. They're the "I can just say no" generation. However, any dramatic depiction of one's addiction to often lethal drugs like heroin or crack cocaine is good film, especially if done as superbly as this. Ben Stiller has become one of my favorite actors. He portrays his characters in total "fifth" dimension and allows his viewer a face-to-face encounter with exactly who he is at that time. He even had me with "Night at the Museum." He creates a character. That's acting. Thankfully, we're not expected to feel sorry for Jerry Stahl. Although human emotion might prevail, pity was not one of mine. Nothing in this depiction ever suggested pity. Films should entertain; the bonus is we'd learn something. This one informs us by someone's gracious admittance to his brutal life choices/mistakes. I was duly informed and thoroughly entertained.

This is about a heroine addiction, not a cocaine habit...just in case anyone watching this movie is wondering why Stiller is sticking himself all the time and never really snorting anything. People of needle phobias should be wary when watching this movie. The storyline is a little shoddy, but this is one of the most hardcore acting jobs I've seen since watching "Reign Over Me" with Adam Sandler. I'm highly impressed with Ben Stiller, and he just raised himself up a notch in my book.
