The concept of a DMC anime is just awesome. Unfortunately the execution is far from it. This anime has a few things going strong for it; a polished stylistic design, a main character who is just awesome, and a plot that just couldn't go wrong. Yet, there are just too many things that do go wrong here...
I've played all 4 entries in the DMC series and I love the series despite the lackluster DMC2 and the iffy DMC4, the 1st and 3rd are just superior games. Initially, this anime showed a lot of promise, apparently taking place after the 1st game (and the 3rd), due to Trish and Lady being present and Dante having the DMC1 costume and a more mature attitude. I was just seething with excitement, waiting on the chance to see some awesome Devil-slaying battles. That's where the biggest letdown of this anime comes in. The emphasis is on the story; which isn't that great and the culmination is rather weak, instead of the style and the action. There are maybe 5 minutes of action devoted in each episode to a pathetic fight which just seems extraordinarily easy for Dante.
I know he's an unsurpassed Devil-hunter, but seriously, not even the final "boss" devil gave him a hard time. It's just sad to see a great character underutilized. There are also many things lacking in terms of Dante, yes he has his characteristic guns and sword, but there was no instance of any other weapon in the whole series. The shotgun, rocket launcher, Ifrit/Beowulf gauntlets, Nevan, anything... just the sword and the guns. Most importantly, his Devil Trigger. I waited and waited to finally see Dante bust out a DT, but he never did. Which is just ultimately disappointing to me as a fan.
Lastly, I want to point out the characters. Other than Dante, every character just becomes more and more annoying as the story progresses. Who the hell is Morrison? I thought Dante handled his own business, kinda detracts from his cool-ness that he has some agent. Patty Lowell is quite frankly the worst part of this anime, There is no need for a cutesy annoying girl to flip the tone of the anime from dark and destructive to cute and warm. Lady gets rather annoying, and even Trish (minus Luce and Sparda) isn't given enough justice. Yes, also, no reference or mention to Vergil, hardly any to the actual Sparda, and just a mere mention of Dante's mom.
I just wish for better fan-service. Just wishing. It almost seems DMC is an anime for people who've never played the game. And to those who have, it's an utter disappointment from start to finish.
