Rating_full Rating_full Rating_empty Rating_empty Rating_empty Too much
Too many characters and way too long for that type of story. While the costumes and sets were lavish, there were too many things going on this movie that often made it very confusing and way out of place.

Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_empty Amazing - Kurosawa is one of the greatest directors
This movie, like many of his movies (Ran, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo) are story driven classics which draws you in with their plots, characters, gorgeous costumes and sets, as well as timeless subjects such as love, repent, war, revenge........

I thought that with its massive length, this movie would drag, but in fact, it kept my attention and interested in the overall plot. Haven't seen a lot of Kurosawa's work, but if this is any indication of his films, I can see why he's a legend. Great flick, check it out!

Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Add this to your movie collection.
I watched The Seven Samurai and Zatoichi both shows are great in their own categories. Kagemusha definitely rises in its own merit and worthy to be in anyone's great movie collection. The movie is a character driven story that feels far superior in today's movies that abuse CG and highly glamorized actors/actresses (I'm looking at you Star Wars).

Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Rating_full Kuraswa always delivers !!!
I never heard of this film before seeing it posted here on hulu. But several years ago, I did see the films "Yojimbo" and "The Seven Samaurai". (Two other Kurasawa classics!!) So just seeing his name associated with this film told me all I needed to know. I knew it would be another great one!

In all 3 Kurasawa films he shows himself to be a great story-teller. He knows how to masterfully use the same technique that I also love about Alfred Hitchcock's films: "what you don't see on camera can be more powerful than what you do see". He is also terrific at giving all of his characters depth and fullness. So even a long film like this one is never boring because there is a plot of substance that is unfolding.

Despite the differences in culture and the usual subtitles, it's never difficult to understand the emotions and statements that he tries to convey. His humorous moments have excellent timing and are very realistic; often coming in the middle of serious scenes to help balance them out.

There are several scenes where the characters' emotions are so tense, you just know that at any second someone is going to draw their sword and start slashing!! But, just like Hitchcock, he makes you wait for it. There is dialogue going on that could tilt events one way or the other....which effectively serves to keep building the anticipation and magnitude of the moment.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. If you liked this movie go see RAN and the great classic The Seven Samaurai.
