First let me say, I have never posted a review on Hulu before, even though I use it frequently. I was compelled to comment because I was so overwhelmed by how well this film was made. Then I found the other reviews...
To all those who posted lengthy comments regarding the racism in this movie, check your white guilt (&/or read some more cultural theory) before you pass any further judgments. The fact that the last post berating this movie as racist also included the line, "I'm caucasian so im not some angry black man ranting about white supremacy" is laughable. Obviously, you've read a lot, but not understood it. You've heard a lot, but not listened.
As a born and raised Jamaican it is beyond insulting to read these comments stating that white people are saving the Blacks again. What do you know of Jamaican culture? What do you know of our tenacity, prowess, and brilliance? Obviously nothing. If you did, first, you would know that our national motto is Out of Many, One People. Unlike North America, especially the U.S., we do not see each other in terms of race. We are all Jamaicans. Our delineations fall along different lines. If you really want to know about Jamaican culture and history read The Story of the Jamaican People by Sherlock & Bennett, Culture and Customs of Jamaica by Pam Mordicai, and Jamaica Genesis: Religion and the Politics of Moral Orders by Diane Austin-Broos.
Now, just so you know, I have been forward in the struggle for liberation for over 16 years now; I am a fully conscious woman of color. This movie, is the story of building lives. Read about the IMF in Jamaica before you pass judgment about where the sponsorship for the dog sled team comes from. Sadly, tourism is a necessary evil for Jamaica. Jimmy Buffet is a necessary evil for this team. It is wonderful to know that a Jamaican (no matter how light his skin is... he is not a white man with a Jamaican accent!) is at the helm of all of this. It is wonderful to see these dogs brought from the brink of death, these men brought out of poverty, into a shaky, but bright future.
My last statement will be in regards to the effort the filmmakers took to incorporate individuals knowledgeable about the political struggles and structure of Jamaica, as well as those who embody the struggle. Thank you! So often we get fluffy, happy-go-lucky films about the beauty of Jamaica, etc., but the reality that the average tourist's vacation spot is our living and breathing home which is not manicured and sanitized is left on the cutting room floor. Thank you too, for highlighting the efforts of the JSPCA. As a veteran animal advocate, it is great to see Jamaica stepping up in this regard.
All in all, this is a superb film, I am recommending it to all my friends & family who will hopefully add their own insightful reviews as well.
