Absinthe would not have replaced wine as the drink of choice in FRANCE during the Belle Epoque if it tasted like drain cleaner. A plauge that killed vineyards helped too.
All that stuff is fake crap that just copped the name. A common term among absintheurs for fake stuff is actually czech-sinthe. Not everything from the Czech Republic is bad though, Zufanek Distillery is one who is actually doing it right (St. Antione, La Grenoule).
Czech burning method was invented in the 1990s as a marketing tool. When you add water to real absinthe the traditional (and historically correct) French way it should get cloudy (louche). If it doesn't then it's not real.
