A remarkably gifted actor, Tony Randall (of "The Odd Couple" fame), elevates what could have been a dreary, formulaic story into a mesmerizing Jekyll & Hyde character study of the internal desperation of an alchoholic. A luminous Jayne Mansfield (mother of "Law & Order SVU" star, Mariska Hargitay) fills her femme fatale role with much more than her outstanding and famed "assets". A moody, lazy, jazz soundtrack contrasts with the ultra-modern, sterile interiors of the "man who has it all", as we are sucked into his downward spiral to the ultimate end-of-the-line climax. Highlights include the superb and subtlely crafted work of Randall as a big-time Ad Executive giving the presentation of a lifetime - for a "space-age" style car that owes more to the giant Manta Ray than the automobile, and transition shots of the real cars and buildings of early 60's New York - what a treat! Hitch closes this episode in a less than usual way, adding impact to the timeless relevance of the most human of stories.
