Klein's opening remarks were aimed at atrocities committed by
"capitalism unrestrained", and then the rest of the trailer showed
people and events that are entirely associated with government.
Governments enact war, governments oppress, governments become
totalitarian, governments put people out of business through the
granting of artificial monopolies, taxation, and regulation.
Governments have a monopoly on the use of force and violence to
achieve its own ends. Profit seeking businesses do not have any of
these capabilities on their own. The only time they are able to do
the things this movie seems to be accusing them of doing is when they
are granted permission by the state, or they manufacture things for
the state, or they have exclusive contracts with the state, which has
to steal your money through taxation and inflation in order to pay for
it all.
The proper criticism should be on our true economic form which is a
hybrid of capitalism and statism that we should term with words such
as "economic fascism, corporate welfarism, corporate cronyism" or just
the blander and less precise "mixed economy." I find it unlikely and
highly contradictory that her solution to these problems would be
increasing the role of government in a further move toward socialism
which has been so roundly proven to be a failed ideology, both
philosophically and historically.
In any case, true capitalism in its pure and truly unrestrained form
has absolutely no stake in keeping people poor, or in war, or in
destruction. True capitalism is simply the system which allows people
to make mutually beneficial transactions exchanging one's private
property/product of one's labor for another person's. Proper
capitalism relies on honesty and personal responsibility to operate
because if those virtues are not maintained business will suffer.
The government and the companies that rely on government for their
profits have no need for honesty, self responsibility, accountability
or any other positive attribute in order to stay in business because
they enjoy the monopoly of force, in fact it is in their best interest
to hide the truth and deflect responsibility in order to continue.
Why do people expect terrible customer service from the DMV or the
Postal Service and just accept it when they become furious if the
same situation occurs at a retail store?
The real culprit behind every single one of those events is
government, none of the companies listed could survive without it.
I must say though, I'm not sure what the angle is on 9/11. I know
people profited on the insurance settlements, but certainly not as
much as they would have by keeping their property and allowing the
businesses inside to continue functioning. I suppose the ones they
will probably go after are the businesses who profited from the
ensuing wars, which again, only the government can enact.
In sum, as informative as this documentary could be, it could be very
damaging if it misplaces the real responsibility for all these events
and does not accurately consider the only possible source for the real
problems and corruptions, the state.
