I'm reading people commenting the weirdness of this anime as being very "Japanese". I believe that's incorrect. It's not weird because it's Japanese, it's weird because it's WEIRD. The writers/directors of this are purposefully trying to make us uncomfortable. I'm quite sure people in Japan are squirming at the grotesque imagery in this series. Also, someone commented on the scene with the eyeball eating as, "like a victory thing. Like in "Dances with Wolves" how the Indian ate the heart of the buffalo after it attacked one of the member of his tribe. I guess it’s a dominance thing." I would guess that comment is partially correct. It is a dominance thing as Kogan Style were currently the dominant, most feared dojo. But as it's members are being murdered, Kogan's strength and dominance are being questioned by the public. He ate that man's eye as a spectacle to say, "We are still strong and crazy, do not mess with us."
I'm liking Shigurui a lot. The sights and sounds of this series are crazy lovely. It's very complex and I do have to go to wikipedia after every other episode to read what's going on.
