I just found this anime and I've been blown away by it. The artwork is amazing. The darkness occasionally obscures your vision adding to the sublime mood of the story. At times the characters become transparent, revealing their inner anatomy. Also, the scene transitions are exceptional. It is a relief to watch an anime without overly innocent, bubbly, comical, high school characters. So far I haven't seen any Japanese people with blond, red, or blue hair, wearing the same ridiculous costumes everyday. I enjoy the slower progression of the story it allows you to appreciate the mood and suspense of the scenes. I especially like the sinister nature of all the characters. It definitely has a darker, gothic nature about it.

A well made Katana is capable of cutting through an entire body with a single stroke in the hands of a master. Cutting through a skull is well within the realm of possibility.

Is it really possible for a samurai sword to cut through skulls?
I mean sure, if the sword was thrusted with great force at a high speed, it could cut through anything. But in these duels...they draw the finishing blow with such a clean smooth cut that it seems almost impossible.

What do you people think?

Yeah, I'm glad there are animes out there that have "realistic" looking characters, and not over elaborate costumes and character designs that make it unrealistic according to the time era.
And I also must agree the plot as a whole is confusing- but I think if you watch all the episodes it will make more sense.

For sure, for whole parts ill be confused on what is really going on but before it ends have a more or less understanding on whats was one guys thoughts and what he wants to happen and what did happen. As well as i could watch this just for the music its great.

I also appreciate warriors/samurai being depicted more or less realistically rather than the ridiculously optimistic depictions more common in anime, that is, that these warriors are manipulative, servile, the relationships are power based and often ugly and despairing, loyalty is not depicted nobly in this anime, rather loyalty is shown to come out of sever abuse and repression...
