My story:
This is my second lay-off in two years.
On March 1, 2010, after 10 months as a senior designer I was let go due to a "change in job requirements". Prior to that I was unemployed for nearly 9 months after being with a company for a year and a half. In my 25 years of experience, I've been laid off 4 times. The first time was in 2003 when I was creative director for a small media/marketing company, then I freelanced or worked through various creative temp agencies only to be offered a full time job a few weeks or months into the contract, work for about a year and then find that the company can no longer afford to keep me on board.
Most have been amicable lay-offs but one was vicious where they lied to the department of labor saying I quit trying to deny me UI benefits. I took it to arbitration and won. As I had kept detailed emails, logs and phone records proving I was told I was going to be laid off, then asked to stay on an extra month, then told not to come back when I called in sick one day and had to go to the doctor's. The following month I collapsed due to lack of oxygen to my brain and had to be rushed to the emergency room.
But even since 2001 I've been dealing with serious health issues yet I continued working hard the entire time, dealing with the stress (which was making my illness worse). So at the moment I am trying to fend off the financial wolves at the door and try to get my health taken care of before I can't work anymore.
This film gives me hope, even when most days I cringe in pain and stress brought on by health issues compounded by late rent and utilities, lack of funds to fix my car and take care of many everyday things.
My hope is that I can find a way to use my many and varied skills and talents to rise above this mire, and reboot my life. I have come to realize what I must earn to contentedly get by... and it is not much. Keeping it consistent is the tough part right now.
Good luck to all who find themselves in similar situations, and many thanks to the film makers for finding it their hearts to make this film. Thank you.
