In 2000, this was still the time of near-relationships (all surface - no substance), rather like the economy and most everything else at that time. It's wonderfully reflective of the superficiality of so much of what was believed to be "in. I find it amusing fluff, but then I'm old and I also appreciate the comic appeal of a bad family in-joke.
