The basic problem with this show is they attempted to please everyone; from kids to adults, grandparents, young couples, minorites, etc. They had to; back then there were 3 major networks. There was no kind of market segmentation or demographic targeting. The Communications Act of 1934 was a public trustee mandate to the 3 networks because of the scarcity of the then available bandwidth; hence the airwaves belonged to the people, and the networks had an obligation to provide the most diversified program to reach the most people. Today's battlestar is very adult, targeting a certain male segment who likes sci fii. The results of deregulation on the airwaves is amazing. This show was considered expensive for network programming and initially had an enormous audience that gradually shrank over a couple of years.
