How far apart are Russia and the United States? Closer than you think, I'll bet! Appropriately named after the shortest distance between these two countries (53 miles), 'Bering Strait' was a Russian musical group which crossed the musical gap to embrace American home-grown Country / Bluegrass music and make it their own.
This cinéma vérité production begins with an interesting glimpse into the lives of the two girls and five guys in their Mother Russia where their talent and enthusiasm for Country music mostly created bemusement. It documents these seven young and talented musicians on their journey to America seeking fame and fortune. They arrive just in time to witness the worst downturn in recent Country & Western music industry history.
Soon, both the film and the band settle into a routine of frustration, tedium and boredom. The solution (for both) should have been "more music!" -- but alas, we get more frustration, tedium and boredom, as the realization sinks in that becoming an overnight success takes time. How about a musical montage, or something? More music, please! Anyway... one band member bails out, but this viewer decides to stick it out to the end.
I'm glad I did; overall, I enjoyed hanging out with the band and listening to their music (more, please!).
