"i think i understand the reasoning behind keeping certain things secret."
No, this has little to do with any sort of official state secret. The #1 concern is that when official secrets are divulged, somebody dies. When the Rosenbergs gave detailed plans about how to build nuclear weapons to the Soviet Union, there were dozens if not hundreds of people who did die as a direct result of that action, and put very literally the USA at such great peril that it put the lives of nearly every citizen in the USA at risk.
Those are the stakes involved with official secrets, not some sort of real silly sort of conspiracy theory. We, as a species, can certainly figure out how to deal with this technology.... because it all came from the mind of man in the first place.
The other problem is that particularly in a democratic country where a transparent process is essential to the governance of such a people, those who would do harm to us often take advantage of that openness, where they can and have used that openness against us. The attacks of 9/11/2001 showed that in the most plain manner, where frankly after a good solid review of those attacks showed Al Queida to be the incompetent bumbling fools that they really were, but it also showed the incredible vulnerability that a country like ours might have.
I've got to give it to the producers of this video some kudos for showing some very interesting and amazing information about nuclear subs. Yes, it was heavily sanitized and in fact could be argued that the information in this video contains information that the U.S. government actually wants the enemies or potential enemies of the USA to know. In a lot of ways that is a good thing too, as hopefully they learn enough about weapons like the U.S.S. Seawolf and other nuclear submarines that they realize engaging in a war against the USA is a foolish endeavor at best.
