Alabama, yes. Green Wing's creator Victoria Pile described the concept as "a sketch-meets-comedy-drama-meets-soap". While the show has sketch elements, the use of consistent characters doesn't allow the show to fully utilize the sketch format, and the overriding soap theme of Caroline chasing Mac dominates. Mac's amnesia in the second series proves the show's reliance on the soap theme over the sketch theme.Similarly, a show has to choose whether it is a comedy or a drama with comedic elements. In Green Wing, the consistent dramatic storyline dominates the show, with comedy fit around the story. Again, I point to Mac's amnesia.A true comedy can choose to be consistent or inconsistent to play for laughs. For example, in the second episode of Black Books, Fran and Manny are played as if they haven't met, even though we know they met at the end of episode one. It's genius, because we feel the same awkwardness as Fran, trying to figure out if sh'e supposed to know Manny! An example of consistency played for laughs is the time travel logic in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, which is played to logical extreme for brilliant comedy!   See 8 other replies
