The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Life and Love of Joe Coogan

Yes, it is beautiful. I heard Dick Van Dyke say that Carl Reiner wrote it and how long it took him because he wanted it just right. I think he succeeded.

The sonet gives me chills. I haven't seen this one since I was a little kid and I forgot the double meaning. So, so beautiful. I wish modern TV was as reverant toward religion and God as DVD was. Now it seems like God is just a tacky punch line. If a character is a Christian, they're made to look foolish. But this was so elegant.

This has always been one of my favorite episodes of the Dick Van Dyke show. It mixes such funny situational humor with something really beautiful. It's one of the best "Laura" episodes, if you want to call it that, because it gives her a time to show the real depth of her character. And the poem at the end, it always gets me:

Mine eyes will ne're behold
which my heart dost see so clearly
inward stirs this passion, deep
beknighting, leading my path away from all
and to my love

I reach out for thee
and pray your hand be there to welcome mine
your light to illum where
my light be spent
for my soul is sore
