I believe that a major contributor to this attitude is the emergence of the corporation as "citizen", especially in America. The corporate representative in this film (what a remarkable human being, I must say) is the polar opposite of the businesses that exist today. Lacking a conscience, they put profit above all (which is to be expected), yet they are awarded rights as if they are actual human beings, and are well-received by the representatives in Washington (who should be representing the people, by the way) due to their lobbying power. This unchecked behavior has resulted in one meltdown after another (financial, ecological, etc) in the past couple of years alone.
To be sure, a major shift in thinking is going to have to occur, as was stated in the film, and it is going to have to occur quickly. I fear it is already too late, and I pity our children and grandchildren, who will ultimately suffer. The house of cards will collapse, most likely in a dramatic fashion. I do not think it is unreasonable to foresee a disaster that will result in a loss of a full third of the planet's population. It is just a question of when.
