I would recommend this movie to others; but, don't expect a masterpiece.
This movie had a lot of potential, and parts of it really excited me. The overall concept of the story was fascinating, and I enjoyed some scenes; however, the script didn't do justice to the concept, and the CG felt pretty dated.
The story: Fun; but, lacking depth. The "little town" rendition of Tokyo was unique and engaging, and I think this saved the film. The villain and some of the main characters were "flat" characters with little development, and the dialog was uninspired. Action sequences were sometimes cool, and other times downright absurd. Certain scenes blatantly ignored the laws of physics, particularly the scene towards the beginning with the plane. Several design/technology elements in the film also crossed the boundary from science fiction into over-the-top fantasy nonsense.
The animation: A few of the scenes surprised me with good lighting and strong, engaging artwork. Many of the character sequences could have benefited from stronger direction or editing, with stilted, puppet-like animation. Awkward camera movements seemed to draw out a few scenes and make them longer than necessary. Every robot/mecha had a straight-from-the-factory look with too much specular reflection, and could've benefited from better textures to make them look even a little bit used, dented, or scratched. The way that SWORD's little Daiwa robots sort of bounced as they moved was interesting - it reminded me of real-life videos of robots. I didn't like the cel-shaded style of the characters initially, but it grew on me a little over the course of the film. The decision to turn a mountainous island into a flat, completely level plain was downright lazy.
