I've heard a lot of complaints about this show on these forums. People say it's too much like Battlestar Galactica, it has too much sex and drama, there aren't enough cheerful and witty characters, and yes, they even call it a soap opera. The criticism I hear for this show isn't very constructive. I would even go as far to say that these complaints come from people who don't know what they are talking about.Why would people call SGU a soap opera?--when a soap opera is a show with stories that never come to a conclusion. A soap opera drags out all its stories across multiple episodes and when they get bored, they don't conclude anything, but rather leave it on a cliffhanger. Were SGU a soap opera, we wouldn't have found out who the killer was in the episode "justice". Instead, the writers would've dragged out the murder mystery over 5 episodes and then ended on something that pointed to one of two main characters as the killer, never giving us any kind of closure. Does SGU have sex and drama? Yes. Does that make it a soap opera? Certainly not!I also find it offsetting when people compare this show to Battlestar Galactica. SGU is nothing like Battlestar Galactica. Where is the religious undertone? Where is the post-apocalyptic ambience and setting that conveys the technology we create will one day be used to destroy us all? I don't think I've even seen one reference to the war on terror in SGU. Is there drama that takes place on a spaceship in SGU? Yes. Does that make it comparible to BSG? No more than any of the other countless sci-fi stories that involve spaceships. What seems to be the case is some of you have so little exposure to stories and writing that it leaves you with nothing else to compare SGU to other than soap operas and BSG. Which are two things you clearly don't know much about either in the first place.
