If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, you should be aware that they've taken great liberties with the character. Holmes is not the truly sharp-witted detective, one or two steps ahead of every criminal. Instead he more or less stumbles onto solving the mystery -- which happens only after a lot of the cast has been murdered - no thanks to Holmes. Holmes even manages to flirt with women which the 'real' Holmes would never do.I agree with the previous poster who said that the Sherlock Holmes actor is not right for this role. To me he is quite stiff and looks out of character as Sherlock Holmes. He looks a bit as if his heart is not in it. Christopher Lee may have many good acting roles to his credit, but this is not really one of them. The film does have entertainment value. It is really more of an Indiana Jones-type film. As someone else mentioned, there is no shortage of jumping onto or off of trains, getting attacked by aligators and lions, and searching for lost treasure in an ancient cave. Unfortunately Holmes and Watson don't seem to really relish all this adventure as Indiana Jones would. Some people like the fact that it includes some historical figures such as Teddy Roosevelt. To me this makes the film even more unrealistic. A former US president is traveling by himself through Africa? There are two scenes where characters go off into the bush to make out and are in the process of tearing their clothes off. (Don't worry, there is no actual nudity). This is a bit surprising for a Sherlock Holmes film. It is a brief moment in course of the entire film but for this reason some people may not consider it a family film. The plot itself has several twists and turns, but it drags a bit in parts at times the film borders on being a dud. In some places the plot hardly makes sense. Not to give it away, but in the final scene you have to wonder, why is the criminal there at all? He could've easily taken the goods and absconded much soomer. All in all, it's an entertaining, though fairly silly movie. True Sherlock Holmes fans would probably not like it. If you can put up with its flaws or if you enjoy the actor Christopher Lee you might find enough to be entertained by. If you want 'real' Sherlock Holmes you should look elsewhere.
