I, personally, wasn't talking about his "versatility". My issue with Artie is the lack of depth to his character so far.
What do we know about Artie? He's in a wheelchair, can sing (how well and how much we like it is subject to personal tastes, but no one can deny he can carry a tune), has a sense of humor (how good is also subject to personal tastes) and seems a bit insecure and shy
What do we know about Artie beyond what we see? That he and his mom were in a car accident which rendered him paralized. (Implies he still has parents). And I believe there was reference in one episode that he had some ties with the jazz band. Excellent.
What else?
...... hmmm.
.............ummmm.
When I say the character lacks depth, I mean... we haven't been given enough of his history and background yet. He's too "Two-Dimensional" still. Does he have any brothers/sisters? What does he do with his time when he's not at school? What do his parents do? What drew him to Glee Club? Does he have a job? Other friends?
I can answer a minimum of two of those questions for the characters of Quinn, Finn, Rachel, Puck, Emma, Will, the old music teacher, the football coach, Sue Silvester, and the Principle.
Artie, Mercedes, Brit, Santana, Tina, that poor "Other Asian" guy... I know about as much about them as I know about Susan Pepper, and that girl has only been in one episode.
I don't dislike the actor. I am not fond of the character, because there just isn't enough of a character for me to find interesting.
