Jake Gyllenhaal pulled off an English accent while doing an action adventure character. He held his own against a knight of the British empire, Alfred Molina and this guy who played the lead Hassasin (don't even want to try to spell his name.)
Somebody actually let these actors develop characters in a summer action adventure flick that we know is based on a animated movie. I thought the story was great, it had me guessing.
I appreciated the performances of all the actors, the brothers and the female lead. She wasn't the whiny/stupid female lead - as written - in the Mummy. For the record Rachel Weiss is a great actress she was given stupid lines in both self-referential and silly Mummy movies. Prince of Persia characters kept their dignity.
Remember Jake Gyllenhaal was in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and The Good Girl. Can't get more diverse than that in your work. And may I say he is really good-looking and buff in this movie while still a tender romantic lead.
I wonder if it isn't us who no longer see when something is more than what we expect. Don't blame the actor - let's take a step back and recognize what we are missing as audience.
I'm impressed Disney did this, tried a different approach to what could have been a disaster. They took something and delivered. I think people should try to enjoy this movie. It tackles a lot - special effects, animation to live action, American lead into action/adventure movie star role.
At least give it a try.
