"C'mon dude, first the gay bar, now this?" No wonder this show got cancelled if it resorted to using tired, homophobic cliches like this to move along it's story line. I honestly think this show could have used a strong, non-stereotypical gay character to redirect some of these people's relationship issues from a different perspective. Instead, Season 2 of "What About Brian" has just cemented itself as another bland "Friends" knockoff about the "trials" of privileged white (Jimmy doesn't really count), heterosexual couples who can't find happiness because they keep getting distracted by the superficial trappings of the L.A. lifestyle. While there have been hints of deeper character development (i.e. Adam reaching out to the homeless man a few episodes ago), nothing substantial has developed, leading me to believe that this show's writers are either terminally lazy or hell-bent on creating superficial characters they think the general public can relate to. But taking low blows against the GLBT population like that (with the seemingly innocuous jokes about gay men in particular) cheapened the whole storyline for the express purpose of gaining majority viewership and boosting ratings. A truly well-written TV show would not have to rely on tropes like this, but sadly it's been the norm long before "What About Brian" was written. Hopefully, future television shows in this genre will dare to branch out of the tired formula and generate new shows with more developed characters and deeper plotlines.
