The cast, the acting, and the moral of the story. Historical accuracy takes a back seat to the message, which is fine with me, since it is not the point.
The time depicted was a brutal time. Rome forgot her early virtues.Corruption was rampant and Roman society turned on itself. There were multiple civil wars,
The Roman men depicted here, died violent deaths. Crassis, greedy for power and loot, died at the hands of the Scythians, who poured molten gold down his throat. Ceaser died at the hands of assassins who did not want a dictatorship.
In reality, the slave rebellion was brutal also. They killed many citizens in their path, not only legionairs, and it got so terrifying in Italy, that Roman mothers who would discipline their children would say to their offspring,"you better be good, or Sparticus will get you".
At any rate,I thought the movie was wonderful, and the reconstruction appeared to encompass new scenes that I do not remember from years past.
