Bob you are absolutely right on the hardware front (and I've lab tested it). I would be entirely too happy if I could find a way to retro-fit my software system into a good Mac for a halfway decent price. My problem lies in the functionality of Apple systems. Hell, the reason I hate Vista and refuse to ever ever use it is because Microsoft tried as hard as they could to replicate the efficiency of an Apple OS and failed miserably because they tried to incorporate their system into a "pick the biggest of everything" hardware system. The result was the same inability to fine tune your computer while doing the exact same amount of computer work for twice the cost. As for Apple systems overall, the simple fact is that it has great hardware and horrible software.Of course, my other problem with Apple is the contracts. I know I don't go to the only university that signed a contract with Apple to sell only their products (and force their students to buy it; I'm not joking, they force it) and in exchange they get to sell Apple products at a price that would make many many people on here laugh. I thank all that is holy that I am not in a program that forces me to use those systems.   See 9 other replies

Actually you're dead wrong. While apple buys their hardware from the same companies, they often have custom-made, limited edition hardware, like when they get chipsets and processors from Intel that noone else gets (e.g. MacBook Air and some Mac Pro models).Also, and more importantly, hardware does not just mean processor, graphics cards, memory and harddrives, this isn't the 1970's anymore. What about multitouch trackpads, 8 hour long batteries in full featured laptops, single piece designs, thinnest desktops and laptops, etc. etc.Finally, there is hardware design and quality- look at any other company and their computer "designs" are no better than what I could make on my own in my basement- generic cases (with their logo painted on, or some funky, ugly-a** colors) with stock parts thrown in and cable and wire hell inside, and inefficient space heaters. Apple hardware on the other hand, is truly "designed" for space and heat efficiency, maximum power efficiency and yes, good looks.   See 9 other replies
