Heath Ledger? this is so strange, is it not?

Having lived in Japan for six years of my life I have to disagree with you here. Sure, they love their own cinema but the majority of western films that are successful in the west, are also successful there. the Japanese seem to embrace American cinematic culture in full stride, while still keeping theirs separate and in tact.As for there not being any original films anymore, you must be looking in the wrong places. A recent example is Inglourious Basterds. Sure... it's another WWII plot to kill hitler movie and some people didn't like it, but it was done in an entirely different way. A WWII historical fiction dark comedy filmed with inspiration from italian westerns. Whodathunkit? There have been several innovative titles throughout the last couple of years. And remember, bizarre =/= good in all cases.As for the whole "movies used to be better, blahrrgh!" Even in the "classic" era there were a ton of garbage movies. People just forget about them and move on. Not to mention the gems that are overlooked due to high-budget blockbusters.Good, original, innovative movies can be found. You just have to look for them. This may or may not be one. The trailer was hardly enough to judge from.Ultimately though, it is a matter of personal taste. No one an unequivocally claim any movie is better than any other, because someone will always disagree with them. And if someone gets the same enjoyment out of something like Napoleon Dynomite as you get out of something like Imaginarium, who's to say which film is "better" since they both achieve the goal of entertaining their audience.

That is just a difference in culture too. I'm sure they can't stand western remakes of there films just as you describe disliking theirs.
Personally, I fell Hollywood has become a steaming pile of garbage. No one is making any original movies anymore. Imaginarium looks like the most unique film in years.

It's actually the opposite with Japan. They "copied" Disney's style and made it their own. America takes some of their ideas, but believe me even when Americans remake asian movies they are better than the asian ones IMO. I've tried to watch a lot of asian films and none of them were too appealing to me. The only one was maybe "My Sassy Girl" Everything else wasn't too good, pretty typical and the stories repeated over and over and over. Hollywood is pretty influential on them too ya know.
