I've worked in various restaurants over the last 7 years, and here's my take on the whole thing... if you're on a diet, and you want to request no butter or oil or something, thats totally fine. I'm actually HAPPY to hear that because the full stick of butter we would have added to your pasta is gross! HOWEVER. If you're going to order a delicious salad or pasta dish, but then say "no onions, no cheese, no mushrooms, no tomatoes, no butter, no added salt, no dressing, sauce on side... etc" please be aware that it will not taste good!! So yes, restaurants can be accommodating, but please don't send it back saying its bland, weird, or "you just can't put your finger on why you don't like it." So if you're going to do a special order, lower your expectations for taste. Also, most restaurants are used to modifying an existing entree on their menu, but don't be surprised if people can't do your special random, not even on the menu order. 95% of the time, there is a good reason, I promise.
