It's certainly not as flashy as some shows, but it feels a little more honest. I love how the recipes seem to be designed for home cooks, who don't have all the time in the world, or the energy after a hard day, to do everything required to make an amazing meal, but still want to eat well.
I loved seeing the connections between different culture's food as well. If you were paying attention, you could track the culinary influences of Africa through Southern dishes to her modern take on them, in Texas. I kept thinking of the original Congo chicken influencing peanut butter and tomato sandwiches in the Southern states, and then her modern take as well.
The lack of measurements didn't bother me. There are a lot of celebrity chef's who leave them out. This is the way my mother was taught to cook. "You take a handful of this, and a couple of pinches of that, mix it until it looks like this ..." no solid measurements, just approximations.
I'm going to keep watching.
