Its kind of the same situation between Kagome and Kikyo. Kagome who has strong spiritual powers like midoriko had has a much more powerful and frankly bigger soul than most humans do. As was pointed out by Kanna (one of naraku's incarnations) when she tried to suck up her soul into her mirror but couldn't get all of it. Perhaps some small fragment of her soul remained in the cave where Midoriko's body now lays. And don't forget, If you remember the scene in the cave Kikyo's soul collecter was obviously nurturing what looked to be a small fragment of Midoriko's soul as it came out of some kind of larva cacoon.
