something i've noticed about some sci-fi shows (and even crime/legal shows) is the necessity to have what are called "stand-alone" episodes. those are episodes that are basic sub-plots that are not necesarrily connected to the main theme. a good example is the series 'The Shield', the main theme of that show was the unraveling of a dirty cop and his fall from grace, yet there were several episodes each season that were your typical "cops-n-robbers" episodes. the same with 'X-Files', there were several mythologies (main plots) and quite a few stand-alones (is there space to count them all?). that's pretty much what's happening with "Fringe". so far i've counted a few mythologies ( the observers, john scott, shape-shifters, peter bishop's "past", william bell), though those are just guesses. at any rate, the rest are just stand-alone episodes that further the idea of "the pattern" and are an opportunity for john noble's character to promote "fringe science"; those are the episodes when we see what dunham & co. are made of. they are so necesarry.one problem with a few other shows i.e. 'Bones', 'Lie to me', etc. is that they are series based SOLELY ON STAND-ALONES. each episode is the same as the previous week, we know how each episode is going to end (there are hardly any two-parters, or sudden, shocking endings - well, hardly any). those shows are only interesting for a few seasons yet they last the longest and EXCELLENT SHOWS (firefly, the sarah connor chronicles, etc.) are disappeared after one or two seasons.
