Whenever a new topic is created in a “Discussion” forum, the original poster is freely choosing to convey a thought or an opinion, and by doing that also conveying an impression of their self. The same can be said of anyone who chooses to make a reply or put forth a new thought into said discussion.
If a remark is silly or humorous, then the only expectations one can have are silly and humorous replies. If a remark is serious and contemplative, then one should expect serious and contemplative discussion in kind. If a remark is posted by an adult that appears to have typed by a second-grader, then comments befitting someone who is an adult but acting like a second-grader will probably be given. And if a remark is rude and inconsiderate, reactions that aren’t exactly “nice” will most likely be forthcoming.
One should also consider intent and put things into perspective; absolutely sometimes someone says something that is misinterpreted, or offends without intending to, or typos or “misspeaks.” And I agree that it’s “rude” to metaphorically pounce on someone for something like that.
However, if someone is blatantly being rude, offensive, willfully-stupid, or a smart-@ss then I personally have absolutely no problem responding in kind. Also, it takes me all of ten minutes or so to respond with three or four paragraphs, and about five seconds to run the spell-checker before I hit submit… so, it’s not like I’m exactly “going out of my way” either.
That said, both Gerson and Modobes were being pretty brazen.
