After a night of passionate lovemaking in which he is bitten on the neck, a troubled literary editor becomes convinced that he is a vampire and begins to live the role.
A frustrated Manhattan literary editor, Peter Loew (Nicolas Cage), meets a mysterious woman (Jennifer Beales). During a passionate night of lovemaking, the woman bites him on the neck, drawing blood. When she disappears the next morning, Peter becomes convinced that she was a vampire and that he's become one too. Despite the protests of his psychiatrist (Elizabeth Ashley), he loses himself to pressure of everyday life, and begins to act the role of a creature of the night.
It's not about a man's descent into madness, either. No one goes insane that way. The film depicts a breakdown such as has never taken place in the history of mankind. It's a caricature of mental illness. Still other people would say the film is a pitch-black comedy in the vein of American Psycho, about a man who uses women, employees, etc, and then begins to think of himself as an actual vampire. Really it's just an abomination. It's not comedy, drama, it's not a film about mental illness. It's definitely not a vampire movie. But I agree with you about people saying it's a comedy being completely off base. I'm not sure what would be funny about the scene where a rape victim lies in bed the next morning, afraid to see people. But maybe I have a bad sense of humor.

Agreed, it could be a really crappy comedy if he didn't seriously victimize the women in his life and then murder a woman. That stuff just doesn't come off as funny crazy behavior.

one of my favorite scenes was in the office he is holding his head and mubble's alva...alva...Alva...ALVA...ALVA!! then he runs out of the office jumps on the desk and screams THERE YOU ARE! and the girl bolt's for the door that was hilarious as he chases her to the ladies room.
I'm suprised and saddened to see this listed as a comedy. This is a man's descent into madness. I personally love this movie, but it is not a vampire flick, it is not a comedy, and I can't imagine how it ended up in the catagory of "reality and game shows".
