This is a bit of a surprising move for Hulu to feature this particular series. Usually, when you bring up ULTRAMAN, the only thing to come to mind was the original series in the 60's. (That or POWER RANGERS, unfortunately...) I have fond memories of watching this on TV every Sunday as a kid and tuning back in, I'd never realized how soaked in campiness it was.
True, the plot of ULTRAMAN: TOWARDS THE FUTURE expects you to put together a couple of pieces on your own and the acting tends to waiver, but that doesn't stop it from being fun! I'm almost reminded of CAPTAIN POWER AND THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE with how much it *did* manage to do on such a low budget: Though the effects aren't that epic, they still manage to capture the feel of its Japanese counterparts, moreso than the rarely-seen follow up, ULTRAMAN: THE ULTIMATE HERO (AKA ULTRAMAN POWERED). However, the real star of the show is the orchestral soundtrack by Shinsuke Kazato--So prolific and amazing that you can't find it in print anywhere else.
Long and short of it: If you're a fan of the original ULTRAMAN series (perhaps even POWER RANGERS too), you'll be a kid again when watching TOWARDS THE FUTURE. Though it tries to get a bit more mature, it's still the same rubber-suit monster beatdown fest you've come to expect. Though really, the question remains: If Tsuburaya still holds the license to this, how long until we can get ULTRAMAN: THE ULTIMATE HERO on here?
