And so begin the dark days for those who have taken the journey to retrieve Sakura's memory feathers.
Here is the beautiful and at times very tragic world of CLAMP's Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. If you are not familiar with it, I highly recommend that you try it from the beginning. Both the manga and anime are quite good in my opinion.
If you watch this without having read the manga -- or at least watching the series -- you are going to feel very lost. Tokyo Revelations and its sequel Spring Thunder are OVA that were originally released in Japan along with volumes of the manga on which it was based --- Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. They follow the story line of a couple of very integral arcs in the tale. As such, they jump right into the action without much explanation for those unfamiliar with the story.
The OVA also pick up the story where it diverges from the anime series. (As often happens when an anime series is running at the same time as a manga that has not yet finished its run, the anime caught up with the manga series on which it is based and took its own direction.) So even if you watched the anime series, this will be a little confusing for you.
When I first watched it on Hulu, it had a Mature rating, though it no longer seems to bear that. I don't think it had really earned it anyway, though some of the violence ventured quite near it. TV-14 sounds about right. I don't think this story could really have avoided the violence. There was a little language, but nothing too bad. Mostly Kuro-sama being his usual surly self. So other than the considerable violence, nothing objectionable.
Tokyo Revelations was very well made. The action is intense and thrilling -- and this time Sakura gets in on it too! It captures the feel of the barren landscape and horrors that will befall them in the course of the story. Through the course of the story, one can also feel the bond that has formed between the main characters. Great action. Great Drama. Great Story-telling. In spite of the horrors that transpire, it is simply a beautiful heartfelt piece.
This is a considerably darker tale than the TRC crew has yet faced and sets the tone for what is to come. In spite of the seriousness of their journey thus far, they have had fun and developed bonds of friendship (though some may have tried to resist) but all that must change now. After this, their journey can never be the same. Though those that are left behind will continue to hold on to their love for the one that they have lost.
