based on Phillip K. D!ck's work
While anything involving robots or androids is likely to contain echoes of Asimov, this show is inspired by the work of Phillip K. Dlck, which is often more subtle and quirky than Asimov. In particular, the movie Blade Runner provides a lot of visual inspiration, and was itself based on "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?". And the plot of the first two episodes comes from "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", which was hacked into the Ahnold movie Total Recall. The show gets better as it goes along, and still had plenty of scope for new plot and character developments when it was cancelled, I think prematurely.

I used to stay up until 2 am to watch this show when it first ran along with psy factor. I cannot believe i found it on here! Brings back good memories!

I just finished watching the first episode. The acting was really bad at first but actually improved as the episode continued to play. This may be attributed to the act of gradually killing off the worst actors with the story line but even the lead characters seem to show improvement toward the end of the show......what was left of them. I emphasize the word improvement because there is still a lot of room for more.

mmm...Blade Runner
This to me, feels like what a Blade Runner series would be like, more than a Total Recall series would be, which gives it higher standing to me anyways... but im still left with one question...

How the heck did i miss this a decade ago? How am I discovering this now? i hope they fired the marketing exec in charge of this show cause they failed miserably.

the works of Isaac Asimov rehashed
The plots and overall story borrow A LOT from Isaac Asimov's robot stories involving an Android and Human detective team. Another main character, the wife, takes after Asimov's Robot Psychologist character Susan Calvin. Even the title "machine dreams" is based on Asimov's books "Robot Dreams" which is a collection of short stories about robots their abilities to be human (notably the plot of the first 2 episodes). The unadultered, original Asimov works are much better than this show. That said, this is TV, not a book, so it is still entertaining to sit back and watch the story unfold.
