this was a childerns story more or less for people too old to remember this was actually a very complex story for the average 5th grader. i will alwasy remember this movie just because of reading the book but most logic in any unlikely tale is thrown out the window to leave more room to puzzle and concern the mind with the actual plot so details details its a good movie. a must see if your into more animation folklore

I like how Joseph S. asks a where the necklace came from and why the other animals are just as intelligent as the experimented on rats and mice. For that matter, why is the female protagonist so smart? (although i suppose the implication here is that her courage of heart gave her something intelligence alone does not grant). All I have to say about the numerous plot holes is: if you're willing to suspend logic enough to watch a cartoon about talking field animals at all, you'll have to let the magic answer for itself where logic fails. I liked the movie, definitely worth a watch.

Great concept here; really liked the idea of animal-experimentation-creating-super-intelligent-rodents, but then ... why could the crow, shrew, owl, etc., all talk as well? They seemed more or less as intelligent as the rats. Were the "evolving effects" of the serum contagious somehow? And where did the magical necklace come from? Did they take that from NIMH as well? An explanation would have been greatly appreciated.
But, other than those issues, I liked it. I have a soft spot for hand-drawn animation, even this relatively "ancient" stuff. Hope it never goes away completely.

this along with an american tail are two of the best old(er) school animated movies ever
An interesting sidenote: when I was younger I thought NI(M)H was a fake place made up for the movie :)

I read the book when I was in elementary school --- Secret of NIMH is a (decent) movie adaptation of the children's novel.
"NIMH" is a fictional spoof of NIH -- the real-world "National Institute of Health" Don Bluth (and a group of Disney animators) left Disney during the early 80's, during a low-period in Disney's Animation division. (They were turning out feature-films with animation quality comparable to Saturday morning cartoons...studio morale was at an all time low because of management & direction. Disney's Black Cauldron was a return to Disney's basics; throw a ton of money and manpower to animation production ... but sadly the script/story was poorly received.) Anyway, if you compare this movie (Secret of NIMH) against Disney's Fox and the Hound (1981), you can see the dramatic difference in animation quality (especially between the background plates.) Truth be told, though, I've always like Disney's hand-animation style over other studios, so actual character movements of Disney's movies (even their low budget ones) feel more seamless to me.

One of my faves as a child. I grew up in Cuba and they used to give this movie all the time... Granted it was translated, but from what I remember nothing got lost in translation. I was unaware that there was a book, so I will definitely look it up. All I know is that as creepy as the movie seem it was always very touching, perhaps the theme song (or melody since I couldn't really understand it) got to me... Watching it today brought back the same feeling, which is unbelievable. Loving it still :)
