No one ever wanted a new Elvira. That was pretty clear by the fan reactions. The Search for the Next Elvira did exactly what it was made to do, put Elvira's name back out in the public eye.
The formula was tired, the challenges were out of character for Elvira and the production quality looked like any local community college video production class with bad flash cuts, poor angles and cheesy visual effects.
Elvira who looks almost identical to her 1980's self (excluding a poorly styled and overly sprayed wig) seemed ALMOST in full character. It was pretty obvious she wasn't thrilled with how things were going and it translated on screen.
The judges were not utilized to their fullest and it was almost pointless to have either of them. Manvira Christian played the catty/mean queen to the extreme and his jokes fell flat (most of the time). Manvira Patterson played the nice/compassionate judge and watching the show it was obvious that whoever edited it made sure to focus more on Elvira and Christian.
Guest judges Rick Baker and Kane Hodder were nice additions but did not stand out and quite honestly didn't really make sense in this situation. This was the search for the next Elvira, not Face Off or search for the next horror villain. Why a special effects makeup artist or a former stunt man turned slasher star has any relevance to Elvira is beyond me.
The most amusing is the winner April clearly never auditioned in front of Elvira and her judges and through out the entire (four whopping episodes) show, the editor made it pretty obvious who they wanted to win by focusing on April and showing nothing but positive comments from the judges. Notice that nothing negative is ever shown on April or said about her.
I think this show could have been good if it had been handled properly and produced better.
