This show is under-rated by die hard fans of the original show.
None of the original cast members reprised their roles for "The Munsters Today", making it the only syndicated series in the world to be re-cast for a new run. The decision not to use the original cast was based on the fact that the 1981 made for TV movie "Munsters Revenge" had been a flop, which featured the original cast who were noted to be "past their prime". Producers of the movie had paid absurd amounts of money to the original cast members (Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo and Al Lewis) to reprise their roles. The cast were at the time dubious about the revival as they had been typecast for so many years.
The movie itself had been produced as a tester for a new series. The idea of a revival was immediately dropped, that is until 1988 when this show came along, and despite some production flaws (compared to the original), this show is actually quite funny, and if you give it a chance it does entertain.
Howard Morton is a great Grandpa, and Lee Meriwether is an amazing Lily. John Schuck may not be a Gwynne Herman, but he was never played that way. Its just all good fun.
Yes, the series changes direction into its third season and becomes 'Married With Children with masks on', but there are amazing performances here, and some great episodes.
My only gripe about this show is that the writing changed direction so harshly, and the show lost the charm it posessed in its first season, but the cast were entertaining to watch. Also, the producers should have stuck to some of the things from the original show to tie it in, like Herman's age, other misc family members, and Herman and Lily's Anniversary (moves from 100 years to 275 years in just 22 years lol).
Overall, a great show... if you want to find out more visit www.themunsterstoday.tk and www.freewebs.com/themunsterstoday.
