For decades now, about the only Laurel & Hardy films available in the U.S. have been their awful films from the late 30s and 40s, made after creative control had been taken away from Stan Laurel. Finally, the copyright battles seem to be over, and some of their best films are being released (including a great DVD box set in Dec. 2011).
The shorts here are from their silent period (1928-32). Personally, I prefer their early talking pictures from 1932-37, but there are still some undisputed classics here. You might be shocked at how violent these films are. "Big Business" and "Two Tars" particularly are built around escalating violence, and are two of the best silent shorts. The violence is inflicted in a rabid, but ridiculously civilized manner (everyone waits their turn to inflict damages on the other).
"Liberty" and "Habeus Corpus" are two of the other standout shorts here.
