I am not, hard of hearing at all, nor is anyone I'm close to, or live with, but I've been watching all television with cc on, whenever possible, for since I was 17, so over 15 years. I do have attention problems ADHD and such, and sometimes process info just a little slower, not to mention all of the slurred, or hurried speech that often happens in television, it can be easy to mis words. I don't always have the capability to pause and re wind several times til I can decipher what the character is saying, and with cc I don't have to. I watch a lot of Sci Fi, and with lots of fictional terms or names, that often have roots in other languages being able to see how the word is spelled can be very useful to understanding more to the meaning and context of a name or term. I have also noticed that often times, that if you don't have the right audio set up, (such as Stereo, surround sound, etc.) you can miss lines altogether, especially for characters off screen. Another advantage that i've noticed to cc is that sometimes there will be characters in the background that are talking so softly that you can't really hear them in the first place, and assume you aren't really aren't meant to. CC will often even display these lines. Another situation in which I was pleased to be using cc was when watching shows such as 'Charmed' and there were spells being cast that were just words backwards, which is not always revealed in the dialogue and would be close to impossible to recognize without seeing the spelling of the words, but knowing that origin added more depth to my viewing experience. It is absolutely not right to deny anyone, access to enjoying television shows, and as someone pointed out earlier, almost ALL television is aired with cc, but NOT on the internet, and as internet viewing is becoming more prolific this will definitely need to be remedied.
