I may be mistaken, but I believe this may be the first TV series to ever attempt to build a serious adult drama around a comic book superhero. This isn't just a cheesy kids' show that's all about action and special effects. It actually takes the characters and stories seriously; and places far more emphasis on the human drama than on the superhuman action and adventure. The stories were often very poignant (which is reflected in the melancholy theme music). This is the show that paved the way for all the later superhero-themed serious dramas and dramedies -- like Buffy, Smallville, and Heroes -- that were made mainly for older teens and adults rather than for little kids. Of course, The Incredible Hulk was designed to be a family show; so both adults and kids can enjoy it. But it will probably appeal to adults more than to kids. But, then again, I loved it as a kid -- so I'm sure that other kids will like it, too.
