This is an amazing show about a TV writer and his life at work as well as at home. Unlike Mary Tyler Moore's show, this show rarely dealt with the 2 worlds meeting each other. DVD plays Rob Petrie whose last name is often mis-pronounced. Rob Petrie is a willfully immature grown man but can get very serious when he feels it's necessary. Some feel he is too immature but that is what I loved about the show, before this show you would have never seen a grown man cry about a kitten stuck in a tree.
It was created, produced, and mostly written by legendary Carl Reiner. He was responsible for some great movies, like "The Jerk." This show is a semi-autobiographical telling of his days working for someone similar to Alan Brady where he worked with the also legendary Mel Brooks!! Buddy Sorrell's character is based on Mel Brooks, just in case anyone reading didn't know.
I used to love this show as a kid. I would watch it on Nick at Night's TV Land. They were all re-runs then but none-the-less still a huge part of my childhood TV. I wish hulu had more seasons up. They are missing the very last episode in season 2 also. What gives? I checked netflix, which streams all 5 seasons. But even so they omitted this episode also, says this episode is "available on disc only." I guess it was there so people would still buy the dvds of DVD :) And I'm gonna. I am a 27 year old man now and have re-watched almost every episode and one thing I noticed this time around is some very dirty joke cleverly disguised by great writing. Like the episode where Buddy puts 10 cents in a can every time he insults the producer, Mel Cooly. At one point Mel asks everyone to go to Alan's office except Buddy and Buddy says, "well what do you want me to do?" Mel starts to say something then quicky stops, then puts about 3 dollars in change in the tin can and says "that's for what I was THINKING!" and walks out. Great Stuff Mr. Reiner!!
